"But whatever things were gain to me, those things I have counted as loss for the sake of Christ. More than that, I count all things to be loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them but rubbish in order that I may gain Christ...

September: Obedience

Introductory Letter August September October November December January February March April May

Is it burdensome to follow all of God's commands? Are they impossible to keep? Does Christ's death on Calvary annul our obligation to obey God's law? Absolutely not! Though portions of the ceremonial law were replaced by the spiritual elements they foreshadowed, Christ's death empowers us to keep His law, not to break it. And we should be extra motivated to obey our Lord when we consider what He suffered out of love for us.

Picture a beam of blessings flowing straight from God to a young lady. Well, actually, it comes straight to her only when she rightly aligns her life with the ones through whom God sends these blessings. This beam of blessings consists of direction, protection, provision, and correction through those whom God has appointed to be in authority over her.

  • God is sovereign, and it is our responsibility to obey Him.
  • God has ordained three spheres of authority through which to direct us: family, church, and state.
  • Each has a distinct, limited jurisdiction.
  • Family is the most comprehensive authority, headed by the husband/father as God's minister.
  • You should seek your father's direction for every area of your life, and obey his will, as long as it isn't contrary to Scripture or a legitimate order of church or state.
  • Age doesn't lessen your need for your father's authority; this changes only at marriage, when your husband becomes your primary authority.
  • The church has authority in matters such as church meetings and church discipline, headed by the elders as God's ministers.
  • The church elders can also provide counsel and influence in a wide spectrum of areas in believers' lives.
  • The state has authority to punish evil, praise good, defend against invasion, build roads, and maintain public order.
  • Obey and honor your parents even when you feel that they're being too strict or limiting your freedoms.
  • The greatest freedom comes from obeying God's will, which He gives through authorities.
  • In the rare case that your parents give a command that directly violates Scripture or a Scriptural conviction that you hold, humbly make an appeal.
  • You can earn your parents' trust by honoring and obeying even unreasonable commands with a submissive spirit.
  • We're teaching this COMMIT Club with the blessing of our parents, because it's an activity we do, and of our church elders, because it's a discipleship ministry.
  • Training you is your parents' responsibility; they have brought you here for us to assist with that.
  • We've taken many steps to ensure that what we're teaching is Biblically accurate, and that your parents knew the Club's content when they decided to send you.
  • Please assist us in keeping your training here under your parents' authority by telling them about what you learn, discussing these issues with them, and when possible, asking questions to your parents before you ask us.
  • Obeying God's commands is a way to show our love for Him.
  • Loving Him is the greatest commandment of all, which we should be sure to obey.
  • Our reason for obedience shouldn't be the promised rewards, or rewards other people received.
  • We should obey God simply because He is God, even if we suffer for our obedience.
  • Be willing to die in order to obey God.
  • We should be willing to wait until heaven for our rewards for obedience: seeing Christ and knowing that we have pleased Him.
  • To obey is better than sacrifice; first things first; do what God explicitly commands.
  • Be willing to obey first, then understand later; obey even if it makes no sense, since God's ways are higher than our ways.
  • Though the cost of obedience seems high, the cost of disobedience is actually much higher.
  • It's easier to obey God when His word abides within us.
  • We must completely surrender to God.
